Conducted by TNS, March 2006. Released by TV3, 2 April 2006, 1000 participants, age 18 and over. Nationally representative. No breakdown was available by smoking status.  The ratio of Yes to No votes is 1.24 to 1.

Comment: Of the 93 Maori responding, 60% support a sales ban, even though nearly half of Maori are known (from other surveys) to smoke. Asians also voted strongly for a sales ban (This would be consistent with few Asian women smoking according to other surveys). The Pacific result is not statistically significant as only 28 responded.

The nature of the Maori Party proposed legislation was not clear when the poll was floated. The number of voters is small for a 9 day voting period.

Could a total smoking ban in New Zealand work?
This question was asked just after 22 February 2006. The wording of the question reflects the original story which suggested that smoking would not be allowed anywhere. Ainsley Thomson. “Maori Party: Ban smoking anywhere, any time.” NZ Herald 22 February 2006, page A1.

Smokers’ beliefs about smokeless tobacco (USA 2003)

 

Of 2028 adult current cigarette smokers in the USA, polled in 2003, 82% were aware of smokeless tobacco products (which can be legally sold in the USA), of whom only 11% believed that smokeless products were less harmful than ordinary cigarettes.
