24 Sept 09 Hone Harawira MP of Maori Party calls for ban on sale of tobacco by 2020.

1990: Banning tobacco advertising was considered impossible.

                      We did it anyway.

2003: Banning smoking in bars was considered impossible.

                      We did it anyway.

2009: Phasing out cigarette sales is considered impossible.

§         What is impossible now will become feasible as smoking decreases.

§         Let’s do it anyway.

2010 Goal

Feasibility of sales ban

Smoking not our future

2010 goals:

End display of cigarettes at retail.

Increase the price of RYO tobacco.

Is a sales ban feasible?  Not now, but by 2020, yes.

See Phase-out issues, blackmarkets.

Smokers who wish to grow and smoke their own can do so.

Import and on-selling would be unlawful.

We owe it to our children and grandchildren, to create a healthier New Zealand where tobacco cigarettes are no longer sold.

Ending cigarette sales will help promote a clean green New Zealand
